Recently, we’ve all had to be more focused on our health than we usually are. The recent pandemic is something we have not previously experienced. Now healthy habits aren’t just desirable, they are essential for survival.
Following the Science
Avoiding sick people, frequent hand washing, sanitizing surfaces, staying home when you are sick, masking when appropriate, and coughing and sneezing into your sleeve are things that help prevent getting sick. If you are going to go around people or into a business be sure that you are comfortable with the level of distancing and sanitizing that is happening. When deciding what you are willing and able to do, be sure to consider the facts about health and disease. No doubt there will be a lot of advice out there about what to do to avoid getting sick. Some of it is not based in science and can even be harmful. Know your own physical vulnerabilities and strengths when you are deciding what to do.
Beyond the Basics
Immunity to disease is made up of many factors. We all know about healthy diet, regular exercise, drinking water, and getting enough sleep. It is also important to “fine tune” these factors. Use this time to improve your diet just a little. Cut down on sugar or caffeine, or add another helping of fresh vegetables. Make sure your sleep is adequate, not only in time, but in quality. Little changes mean a lot and they add up over time.
The Role of Inflammation
We now know that inflammation is the culprit at the root of many chronic diseases from diabetes to autoimmune disorders and more. Keeping inflammation away means not only avoiding the wrong types of foods (sugar and refined carbohydrates are known sources), but also keeping the right mental attitude so that your body does not over produce stress hormones. Staying mentally healthy and calm is not easy and may require extra effort, especially when you are worried about health and finances. For some people, meditation or prayer is helpful. For others, phoning a friend, enjoying a good book, or looking at nature can help them stay calm.
The Role of Chiropractic
Chiropractic absolutely has an important role in your healthy lifestyle. Chiropractic adjustments can help decrease pain and discomfort, which can weaken you. Chiropractic care is one tool for your healthy lifestyle, assisting your nerves and muscles to function as they should. Chiropractic adjustments are specific, and are performed after a detailed examination and analysis.
