Kids should be checked for curvature when they are 7 to 8 years old to intercept scoliosis before it manifests in a serious curve. The earlier they are treated, the less likely it is that they are going to get a life changing deformity.
Doctors of chiropractic are qualified and trained to detect scoliosis. Scoliosis is detected through physical examination, medical history and Xrays. Other diagnostic methods such as non-invasive nerve scans and muscle tension scans may also be used in the chiropractor’s office.
Very severe cases of scoliosis may need to be treated with surgery or braces. Scoliosis that is very severe will already be apparent to the child’s parents. However, there some cases of scoliosis can go undetected and cause life-long problems. Parents may think that a child is “just growing” and will grow out of it. Or parents may be completely unaware that there is a problem.
Symptoms of scoliosis in children include: Shoulder bone (scapula) may stick out on one side, one shoulder may be higher than the other, one hip may appear higher than the other, the child appears to lean to one side, or the spine appears slightly rotated.
In addition to gentle, non-force, specifically directed adjustments, I also advise my patients about exercises, activities and postural imbalances that can affect the condition and discuss an overall healthy lifestyle that can build a strong foundation for adulthood.
I use gentle, non-force chiropractic techniques that do not require any cracking or popping. These techniques work well for children.
